Old enemies Lioli and Matlama clash

By Nthako Majoro

MASERU-The Vodacom Premier League  match between heavyweights Lioli and Matlama—which had initially been set for December 18 at the TY Ground in Berea —has been rescheduled for this Sunday at the same venue.

The fixture had to be called-off due to a waterlogged pitch, but finally goes ahead this weekend, with fans assured of entertainment galore in arguable the biggest clash in domestic football.

What adds even more excitement to Sunday’s clash is it comes at a time both Matlama and Lioli are struggling in the bottom half of the 12-team Premiership table.

In an interview on Monday this week, Lioli coach, Katiso Mojakhomo, told Public Eye: “All we are praying for is for the rain not to come pouring down like it did the last time. We need to play this match, with a win going a long way in boosting our players’ morale.”

“It is no secret that we are currently not doing well; in fact, we are more desperate than Matlama, to win this upcoming tie.”

Lioli were held to a 0-0 draw by the Premier League rookies, Mpharane Celtics, at home last  Saturday, and Mojakhomo is well aware the team cannot afford any more slipups.

On the other hand, Matlama spokesperson, Lesolle Phalatsi said Tse Putsoa were ready for their traditional foes.

“The date for the match has been announced, and we have no problem with that. We are going there bubbling with confidence, and looking forward to a good match.”

Last season, the two adversaries played to two goalless draws in their league clashes. But Matlama prevailed when the two sides met in the Vodacom Soccer Spectacular tournament last November, winning the first leg 1-0 in TY and settling for a 1-all draw at the Setsoto Stadium in the return fixture.

Meanwhile, in other weekend Vodacom Premier League matches, Maduma take on  Likhopo and LCS clash with Joy on Saturday, while on Sunday, Bantu host Majantja.
